A First Post, or an Explanation

For what felt like an eternity — or maybe has been — I decided to hold off on building a website. Not out of negligence, nor a lack of persistence, persé, but merely because I haven’t felt compelled to postpone another project to work on this one. I knew if I were to embark on this journey it’d require constant work; I wouldn’t be content if there wasn’t a blog I regularly posted to, or projects I wanted to talk about. After what has been, quite frankly, a rollercoaster of a year, I decided now was the right time to build myself a website. There were two considerations I had when making this site: how can I confidently share who I am, and how can I produce meaningful content?

Produce meaningful content? Yes. I think we, as humans, like to focus on our accolades. We like to brag, shout, and say “look, I got X downloads, Y users, and made Z amount of money.” We’re quick to talk up our triumphs, but we’re hesitant, if not reluctant, to discuss our luck, humility, and disappointments. This has always been my issue with personal websites, people make themselves seem like golden gods, like they have found the “solution.” When I say I want to be helpful, to do something meaningful, what I mean is I want to share — I want to contemplate not just the positives, but the negatives.

So here’s my lesson. While it’s empowering to focus on your successes, learnings, triumphs, etc, it’s equally as important to show empathy, courage, and compassion. This is a serious statement, and I felt if I was going to have a website this was an important consideration.

Finally, my goal is to have fun. To share cool things, to interact with interesting people, and discuss all that might pique my interest.

In the next few days I hope to post an article I’ve had a great deal of joy working on — it involves some legacy devices.

Thanks as always,

Zane 👋
